On a Sunday afternoon, women in fashionable outfits gathered for the first of a series of upcoming mixers presented by Lights Camera Action titled ‘Bizzy Women’. At each event, Lights Camera Action will aim to highlight a woman owned small business. This mixer highlighted Madhavi Gokhale’s Desserts ‘n’ More [www.dessertsnmore.com].

Each event provides an opportunity to mix, mingle, dress up and be photographed. The idea is to have fun while at the same time help each other’s business goals. Surprises await at each mixer.

Indira Vishnampet, CEO, Hydus was the moderator of the discussion which informed attendees of job opportunities in the healthcare,  financial, and education fields.

The conference hosted speakers sharing inspirational stories and leading seminars on the issues that matter most to women, including health, personal finance, business and entrepreneurship, media and more. It offered incredible opportunities for business networking, professional development and personal growth.

The Greater Houston Women’s Chamber of Commerce is a non-profit business organization of highly influential and diverse women and men dedicated to the advancement and empowerment of women through avenues of leadership, education, advocacy and mentoring.

The conference was very well attended and speeches by Mayor Bill White and Texas first lady Anita Perry were some of the highlights of the event.

Leadership Incubation with NetIP, CLUB 24 and Center for Houston’s Future

NetIP and CLUB 24 put together an evening of professional and personal development. The event was held at one of CLUB 24’s members’ home.

Business and community leaders from CLUB 24 and the Center for Houston’s Future participated and mingled with the young professionals from the Network of Indian Professionals, a networking group spread nationally that engages its patrons through events in professional development, cultural and political awareness and community service.

The event was part of a series of events that NetIP will be hosting. “This great opportunity is solely possible due to the strategic partnership with CLUB 24, a philanthropic organization made up of business and community leaders engaged in building bridges between various organizations to encourage leadership and community growth,” informed Ajay Sarpeshkar, NetIP President.

Pastries Against Poverty

Event: Pastries Against Poverty

Jalebees, chocolate cake and cheesecake were catered at a Rice University banquet hall as the Owl Microfinance group hosted an event called Pastries Against Poverty, a dessert and silent auction event. The main agenda of the event was to help entrepreneurs worldwide lift themselves from poverty.

The speakers for the evening were Janie Barrera of ACCION and Cristal Montanez-Baylor of the Hashoo Foundation. The event was well organized by the students who were also quite thrilled by the presence of Mayor Bill White.

Asia Society 2009 Corporate Conference

The U.S.-China relationship has been called by many financial analysts and policy makers ‘the most important relationship in the world for the next twenty to fifty years’. As a result, Asia Society Texas Center brought together a wide range of China experts and specialists to Houston for their Corporate Conference, such as Ambassador Stapleton Roy, renowned China scholars and watchers like Orville Schell, Linda Yueh, Dr. James Willerson, Simon Tay, Steven Lewis, Rick Pal, Martyn Goossen, and Henny Sender.

The conference experienced a good turn out with some engaging speakers.

Indo American Chamber of Commerce of Greater Houston 2008 Awards Banquet

Due to Hurricane IKE the Indo American Chamber of Commerce of Houston had to reschedule their awards banquet which was finally held on Friday January 30, 2009.

The event was sold out as the Chamber honored Harris County Judge Ed Emmett and Houston Mayor Bill White for their extraordinary Leadership during Hurricane IKE at the awards banquet.

The Consul General of India Hon. Sanjiv Arora was the Chief Guest for the occasion.

At the event the best Community service award was bagged by Mr. Bangar Reddy of India Culture Center, Atul Vir got the entrepreneur of the year award and the Women’s entrepreneur award was given to Yasmin Wadia.

Minority Enterprise Development Week

The Power of Strategic Alliances in the Global Economy was the theme of the MED Week held in Houston in the month of October 2008 at the Hotel Hilton, University of Houston.

Minority Enterprise Development Week (MED Week) was designated by a presidential proclamation in 1983 to recognize and promote the achievements of minority-owned businesses and advocates of minority businesses. It is a national initiative of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA). The event is celebrated and locally hosted by the Houston Minority Business Enterprise Center (HMBEC), which is operated by Grijalva & Allen, P.C. and partially funded by MBDA.

MED Week is designed to bring together private and public sector officials, corporate and government administrators and coordinators, political leaders, and knowledgeable business leaders and entrepreneurs to share information on key business issues and create, execute, and deliver business opportunities.

Indira Vishnampet’s company Hydus received Technology firm of the year award at the event.

Launch of Youth Leadership Development Program

Indian American Entrepreneurs gathered on a Saturday afternoon at the newly constructed India House in Houston, Texas mid October to pass on their entrepreneurial skills to the younger generation of young professionals and students.

The event was very well attended by not only students but also parents who participated in a tête-à-tête with the organizers to learn more about the leadership programs and discuss some concerns.

Present in the crowd was Biki Mohindra, Atul Vir, Sushma Bhan, Manisha Mehta, Swapan Dhairyawan, Bangar Reddy, Sangeeta Pasrija and other leaders of the community. From NETIP Ajay Sarpeshkar and Farida Hasanali who is also the executive committee member for YLDP.

Tomorrow’s Jobs for Today’s Woman

It was all about the women on Thursday evening October 23, 2008 6:30pm to 8:30pm at the Westin Galleria Hotel in Houston , Texas . The Indo American Chamber of Commerce of Greater Houston along with Houston Minority Business Council and Women’s Business Enterprise Alliance presented a panel discussion on ‘Tomorrow’s Jobs for Today’s Woman’.

With some diverse panelists the event took off with excitement and rhythm. The moderator Indira Vishnampet, founder and CEO of Hydus did quite a decent job in engaging the audience.

The panelists included Jo Casady, Managing Director at the Prudential’s Greater Texas Agency since 2004. Her work involves achieving sales, market share, productivity targets and financial objectives.

Then straight from NASA, Sabrina Singh who trains astronauts on the spacesuit to do spacewalks. She has trained astronauts living on the International Space Station and Space shuttle, including Sunita Williams.


Also joined Sonal Bhuchar, who is not only a mother of three but also a physical therapist in practice for the last 27 years and President of the Fort Bend ISD Board of Trustees 2008-2009.

What made the event exciting was its simplicity and interaction with the audience. It did not consist of boring speeches and long lectures. Jo Casady told the inspiring young women entrepreneurs to learn to balance, that is to pick organizations that made a difference and get involved with them. “Networking is very important,” said Sabrina. She also assured the crowd that it is never too late.

This event that was sponsored by The Prudential Insurance Company of America concluded with a Q&A with the audience. “The Chamber enables hosting such events in order to increase awareness, a help network supporting you and your business succeed,” added Jagdip Ahluwalia.

The Indo American Chamber of Commerce of Greater Houston hosted its third Small Business Success Series at the Bombay Bombay Brasserie Restaurant, Houston , Texas on August 28, 2008. The topic was ‘Marketing and PR for Small Business.’

The speakers for the evening were:

TRISHA AHLAM from Texas Education Marketing Inc Kevin Price from Houston Business Media Group Paul Shah with Air Generate moderated the session.
It was a sell out seminar. IACCGH Executive Director Jagdip Ahluwalia started the program while Introduction of the program was commenced by IACCGH Board member Ajit Thakur, Co-Chair, Small Business Series.
